Built in 1955 at Eastleigh Works of British Railways Southern Region to Lot No.30086, Diagram 93, issued in April 1953, this vehicle is known as a Tourist Second Open (TSO) carriage and seats 64 passengers. It is known to have operated on the London Midland and Eastern Regions of British Railways. It was stored in a carriage shed in Newcastle upon withdrawal and suffered some vandalism before entering preservation in 1991 at the Llangollen Railway in private ownership. It was sold in April 2001 and moved to Oswestry the following month for overhaul but then moved back to the Llangollen Railway in August 2008 for completion of its restoration and remained there until May 2021 when it returned to Oswestry and became an asset of the Cambrian Heritage Railways.
It remains in almost original as built condition except for the tables but it does retain its tungsten lighting, which is a rarity in preserved Mark1 coaches on Heritage Railways. Sitting on the original type bogies, it could run up to 90mph but is now limited to 25mph on this railway.
Seating 64 passengers in deep cushioned seating, this vehicle is a useful people carrier on today’s expanding Cambrian Heritage Railway.
