About Cambrian Heritage Railway

Cambrian Heritage Railways Ltd (CHR) is a volunteer-led charity dedicated to preserving and restoring the unique railway heritage of Oswestry. Our mission is:

“Securing the restoration of the Cambrian Railways to preserve the unique Railway Heritage of Oswestry and to provide a visitor attraction of national significance.”

We operate two separate railways: one based in Oswestry and the other at Llynclys, each offering unique experiences and contributions to our mission.

Our Operations

Oswestry Railway

Passenger services run from Oswestry Station to Weston Wharf, covering 1½ miles. This site also includes the historic Station Building, Goods Yard, and the Cambrian Railways Museum.

Llynclys Railway

Located four miles south of Oswestry, this site is home to our Carriage & Wagon Restoration Department and the popular "Drive a Train Experience".

How We’re Funded

CHR relies on a combination of funding sources to support its operations and restoration efforts:

  • Membership Fees: Contributions from our dedicated members.
  • Train Rides and Experiences: Income from passenger services and DATEX.
  • Fundraising Initiatives: Annual raffles, public donations, and legacies.
  • Grants and Support: Additional funding from the European Rural Development Fund, Oswestry Town Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, and Shropshire Council, which assists with infrastructure projects like pathways and bridge restoration.
  • Industry Support: Equipment and materials provided by Network Rail and Porterbrook Leasing.

Our business model focuses on “funding first.” We adapt our plans to align with available funding opportunities, ensuring sustainable progress toward our mission.

Our Vision for the Future

Although we hold a Transport Works Act Order permitting trains to run from Gobowen to Blodwell (a total of eight miles), challenges such as level crossings on major roads require additional permissions and funding to extend operations further.

At Cambrian Heritage Railways, we are committed to celebrating Oswestry’s railway legacy while creating a visitor attraction of national significance. With the support of our volunteers, members, and partners, we continue to restore and expand this vital piece of history for future generations.
